About Us
BILETA is the British and Irish Law, Education and Technology Association. It was formed in April 1986 to promote the use of technology in legal education throughout the UK and Ireland. The Association undertakes the following activities:
- organisation of the annual BILETA conference
- promotes research projects
- supports the development and distribution of software - such as from the Law Courseware Consortium
- provides information on technology in law developments
- supports the publications of the UK Centre for Legal Education
- supports relevant research academic journal publications
- makes representations on technology and law through the production of written reports
- liaises with academic organisations and professional organisations, such as those listed below
The work of BILETA is dependent on the funding provided by its membership. We have no funding source other than the generosity of our members. We hope that you will consider the monies well spent on the type of projects and initiatives which BILETA supports, all of which provide benefit to the law & IT communities in the UK and beyond. A particular benefit is that as a valued institutional member your staff receive a conference discount when they apply to attend. Further, as indicated above, BILETA actively seeks requests for funding from academics from member institutions to allow projects to be undertaken or completed which reflect the goals of BILETA. The funding may be used, for example, to employ students for short periods or for help in organising a workshop or small conference.

Linked Organisations
BILETA maintain links with a number of organisations. Links to these bodies are given below.
The British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) provides access to the most comprehensive set of British and Irish primary legal materials that are available for free and in one place on the internet. BAILII included 76 databases covering 7 jurisdictions, with around 11 gigabytes of legal materials and 200,000 searchable documents. Also available on the site are links to the mirror sites for other jurisdictions: AustLII (Australasia), CanLII (Canada), HKLII (Hong Kong) and PacLII (Pacific Islands). BILETA is a sponsor of BAILII.
The European Journal of Law and Technology (EJLT) is a refereed open access journal focusing on issues of law and technology in a European context. EJLT was previously published as The Journal of Law, Information and Technology (JILT). BILETA is a sponsor of EJLT.
The Higher Education Academy (HEA) supports a large network of learning and teaching practitioners involved in legal education throughout the UK. They provide funding, events, resources and a large number of opportunities to network with learning and teaching practitioners from a variety of institutions and roles. A list of forthcoming events is maintained by the HEA and a database of resources for legal education.
